Bentwood box & slip-on lid (sponeske) with burnt decoration, circa 1800 from Norway. Wood was often dyed prior to carving to make the motif more prominent. This piece combines incised carving with utsnitt (point carving). The horizontal pieces are secured with small wooden pegs; the bent sides are overlapped & chain-stitched with a root fiber. The wood carving (karveskurd) typical of a late Middle Ages art form. Donor: John Stensrud. Size: 2¼" x 3¾"
